Background and history
The Filière Fracture Osteoporosis Consultation at the Hôpital Fribourgeois (HFR) began operations in January 2017. Since then, it has been striving to provide personalized medical follow-up for osteoporosis patients, particularly those with fragility fractures.
In November 2020, theInternational Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF), through its CAPTURE the FRACTURE program, recognized HFR's Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) with a bronze ranking. This service is now an integral part of the HFR Rheumatology Department, underlining its commitment to improving osteoporosis care Capture the Fracture - HFR Fribourg.
Collaboration with other healthcare establishments
Osteoporosis consultations at the HFR are part of a network of collaborative care pathways with several other healthcare institutions, such as :
- RésOS screening network
- Geneva University Hospitals (HUG)
- University Hospital of Vaud (CHUV)
- Neuchâtel Cantonal Hospital
These collaborative networks enable us to optimize the management of patients affected by osteoporosis, a condition that is often under-diagnosed and difficult to treat without early detection.

Personalized care
To improve post-hospital and pre-hospital care for patients undergoing osteoporosis consultations, HFR (Hôpital Fribourgeois) and RésOS have chosen to collaborate with OKenawa®. The aim of this collaboration is to introduce regular physical activity, specifically adapted to the needs of osteoporosis sufferers.
OKenawa®: an original and adapted physical activity
OKenawa® is a low-impact physical activity inspired by the martial arts and the Alexander Technique, designed to be gentle on the joints, yet effective in strengthening muscles and preserving bone density. This activity is carried out in parallel with regular specialized medical follow-up, as well as biological monitoring, carried out in partnership with the HFR hospital laboratory, accredited to international standards ISO 15189.

A holistic approach
OKenawa®'s approach to getting back into motion takes into account the individual needs of participants. This approach combines medical, sporting and scientific aspects to guarantee measurable results in terms of muscle strengthening, balance and fall prevention (while minimizing the risk of injury).
Martial arts physical activity using the principles of the Alexander Technique respects each person's unique motor skills, by adjusting :
- intensity and type of exercise
- Duration of sessions
- Frequency of sessions

Care and Support
A personalized, tailored approach
The medical personalization and exercise program implemented by OKenawa® takes into account the history of each participant. These factors include
- General condition
- Age and gender of the individual
- Type of fracture
- Type of current treatment
Biological results reported by the laboratory, in collaboration with the HFR hospital laboratory.
In addition, the treatment also takes into account each individual's lifestyle and sporting history, to better personalize the exercise program and guarantee its effectiveness.
Specific, realistic goals
Each program is designed with specific, realistic and achievable goals, accompanied by defined deadlines. This approach enables progress to be monitored at regular intervals in a structured way, guaranteeing measurable results.
Appropriate tools and exercises
The tools used, whether physical exercises or medical follow-up, are individualized to match the physical capabilities of each participant. This ensures that each participant's limitations are respected, while stimulating significant progress.
